– A Colorado ski resort has reported at least 109 confirmed cases of coronavirus among employees. That works out to 6.4% of Winter Park’s 1,700 employees, the Denver Post reports. In a joint statement with local health officials, the resort said research showed that “these cases are not due to transmission through interaction with visitors, but rather to social gatherings outside the workplace and in joint housing.” The virus outbreak was declared on January 23, but was only reported this week. Winter Park said it is working with medical experts to find ways to prevent future spread among workers People
But due to the low number of people tested, per KOAA, the actual infection rate may be higher. According to CNN, it is the largest outbreak in a Colorado ski resort so far this season. A spokesperson for the resort said, “We went through extensive planning and had to get state approval for our operations before we could open on Dec. 3.” Measures taken by the resort include a mask mandate, limits on food and the number of people allowed, contactless accommodation, more employees, and more testing for them. An assistant to Governor Jared Polis said Colorado ski resorts “need to plan and manage better work for peak weekends.” (Read more stories about the coronavirus.)
