The latest leak from an insider claims that Microsoft is pursuing the acquisition of Techland and with it the exclusivity for Dying Light 2.
In the past year, Microsoft made its largest gaming-related acquisition to date by picking up ZeniMax Media and its subsidiaries such as Bethesda. It was just the latest in a string of high-profile studio acquisitions to bolster the Xbox Series X’s future gaming lineup. But even as the ZeniMax deal closed, Microsoft made it clear that it would continue to aggressively pursue future acquisitions. And a new leak could reveal that Microsoft’s next target is Techland’s Poland-based team.
As many know, rumors are circulating about Microsoft’s attempt to acquire a studio from Poland in late 2019. However, no acquisitions or specific studios were mentioned. Now the rumor has returned with a clear focus.
YouTuber Jeremy “ACG” Penter claimed on the Defining Duke podcast that Microsoft wants to buy an exclusive video game for 2021. In addition, Microsoft would also take over the developer / publisher. However, ACG does not explicitly say Techland.
The extra detail instead comes from a second insider / leaker passing by Shpeshal Ed on Twitter. Shpeshal Ed says after “digging” they found out that ACG is talking about Techland. The video game ACG refers to would be too Dying light 2Shpeshal Ed does not make this claim with certainty, it must be made clear.
So the studio and the game ACG was referring to … I did some digging and asking around. I’m pretty sure he’s talking about Techland and Dying Light 2

In summary, Microsoft is rumored to be on the hunt for or already struck a deal to acquire Techland and perhaps a console exclusive deal Dying light 2 in the process. The leaks do not clarify whether Microsoft is pursuing another deal or whether a deal has already been struck. Finally, these leaks do not provide any sources or conclusive evidence of their leaks. ACG’s predictions have a mixed track record, but Shpeshal Ed has made several accurate leaks in the past.
Perhaps not coincidentally, there are other rumors that could be related to this acquisition, if it is true. For example, Techland said that in January Dying light 2 news would come soon. Another rumor has it that there will be an unannounced Xbox event in mid-February.
For now, Xbox and Extinguishing light fans would be best served to maintain a healthy amount of skepticism. Microsoft will likely make more acquisitions down the road, but not every rumor or supposed leak will be accurate. If Dying light 2 news is really coming soon, fans will know the truth about a Techland takeover in weeks or months.
Dying light 2 is currently under development.
