The leagues’ names have changed, as have many of the member companies, but Minor League baseball will be in hundreds of North American communities by 2021.
Major League Baseball announced a new plan for affiliated baseball on Friday, with 120 Minor League teams joining the new Professional Development League (PDL). In total, the system includes 179 teams in 17 leagues across 43 states in the US and four provinces in Canada. Including the Arizona Fall League and the Gulf Coast League, there will be 209 clubs in 19 leagues, playing a total of 44 US states and four Canadian provinces.
The different leagues are the American Association, the Atlantic League, the Border League, and the Pioneer League.
“We are delighted to unveil this new model, which not only provides a path to the majors, but also continues the Little League tradition of hosting millions of families in hundreds of communities,” said Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. “While modernizing our Minor League system, we prioritize the qualities that make the Minor League such an integral part of our game, while strengthening the way we develop athletes on and off the pitch. We want all the best of our game in local communities, by supporting those who work hard to promote the sport and share unparalleled technology and resources with our teams and Minor League players. ”
