Vaccines that the country will use are very effective

The three types of vaccines against the Covid-19 virus that have been directly contracted by the country to date, such as those from Pfizer, those from Astrazeneca and the coronavac from the Chinese company Sinovac, have efficacy ranging from 50 to 95%, indicating that these rates reduce the risk of contracting the virus in vaccinees

Meanwhile, vaccine specialists and medical leaders yesterday welcomed the President of the Republic’s announcement that the country has obtained 768,000 doses of the coronavac vaccine from Chinese private company Sinovac, among others contracted with pharmaceutical company Pfizer and AstraZeneca.

The country is also listed to receive these and other types of vaccines through the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) through the Covax mechanism.

When asked about the Sinovac vaccine, Dominican Vaccination Society president Dr. JosĂ© Brea del Castillo explains that the Sinovac company’s coronavac vaccine has been used with very safe results.

He explained that several efficacy studies conducted in countries where it is applied give results of 63, 50 and 91%, but they agree that it protects practically 100% of vaccinees, so they do not need to be hospitalized admitted, neither serious, nor go to intensive care, no death.

Benefits of the vaccine

The vaccinologist points out that the arrival of the Chinese vaccine, which is expected to take place in the next two weeks, will go a long way in reducing anxiety and supporting the vaccination plan.

Among the benefits of this vaccine, he mentioned: that it is cooled to between two and eight degrees, which is a cold chain that the country has nationally; It comes in a single or single dose per bottle, which means there will be minimal human error and vaccine wastage or loss; has very low side effects, 1 to 2% and there have been no reports of serious side effects.

Adding to this, he indicates that it is easy to store, cool and apply. He explained that it is a Chinese company that has been manufacturing vaccines for 20 years and that coronavac is currently being used in Indonesia, Turkey, China, Brazil and Chile, but it has already been taken over by Uruguay and Colombia, while Mexico has just taken over. approved it.

Vaccination plan

CMD is not aware of the plan, but is willing to support

Consulted on the birth of Sinovac and the Dominican government’s announcement that it will provide details of the vaccination plan to be implemented in the country next Monday, Dominican Medical College (CMD) president Waldo Suero said the union knows no details about it.

“They don’t know the plan that will be announced, but we are always ready to serve the nation, the government,” said Suero, indicating that they have not been summoned before Monday and have no knowledge of that plan.

Regarding the purchase of the coronavac vaccine, Dr. Suero pointed out that they are against any vaccine and encourage the government to purchase all approved vaccines.

However, he noted that Sinovac’s studies indicate it is not as effective as Sputnik5, Moderna and Pfizer.

Therefore, he reiterated his suggestion that in sectors more exposed to the virus, such as those working on the front lines, the vaccine used is the one with the highest rate of efficacy.

According to studies, the Russian Sputnik V vaccine is 91.6% effective against symptomatic manifestations of the virus and that of Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna 95% and 94.1%, respectively. 70% of the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca and Sinovac ranges from 50 to 91% in different studies
