Wandavision’s Quicksilver Reveals Undo X-Men Canon Theory

Evan Peters plays Quicksilver in WandaVision, but Episode 6 confirms that this is still the MCU’s Pietro, not the one from Fox’s X-Men movies.

Evan Peters plays in Quicksilver WandaVision, but the events of episode 6 brought to light the theory that makes Fox’s appearance as Pietro Maximoff X-Men movies that are part of the MCU canon. While WandaVision is full of surprising twists, the biggest came at the end of episode 5. When Wanda opened, she was greeted by Evan Peters as Quicksilver, with Darcy Lewis looking back at SWORD’s camp, saying he had been “recast”, since the character was played before Avengers: Age of Ultron by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The arrival of Peters’ Quicksilver in WandaVision raised a number of questions, not least what this meant for the X-Men films. While the X-Men and Mutants were off limits when Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver made their MCU debuts, Disney’s takeover of Fox means they’re very much on the table now. In addition to the multiverse that becomes more visible during phase 4, Peters’ appearance comes in WandaVision could have been the first step towards introducing the X-Men into the MCU.

In WandaVision episode 6, a little more light is shed on Pietro coming to Westview. It has been confirmed that Wanda was the one who brought him into her altered reality, even when she was not fully aware of it. Plus, Quicksilver even refers to his Age of Ultron dead, saying: “I was shot in the street for no reason, and before I know it, I heard you calling me.” While Pietro’s memory of events may deem Hawkeye a bit harsh, it does make it clear that this should be the same Quicksilver that has always existed in the MCU, but with some changes to avoid causing Scarlet Witch’s trauma, namely even being used in the episode to explain why Pietro looks like Evan Peters instead of Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

All of this means that the Fox X-Men movies are not part of the canon of the MCU, even within the wider multiverse, and it has not yet begun to introduce mutants. That’s okay, though, and it makes sense. The idea that this Quicksilver is the same one that died fits better with how the show explores Scarlet Witch’s most devastating losses and painful experiences. Just like the corpse of Vision in it WandaVision Episode 4, Quicksilver appears as his bullet-ridden corpse in Episode 6, further drawing parallels between how and why Wanda eventually brought them back, while underlining that neither is really “alive” at this point. Indeed, as if he really wants to hit the point home, Taylor-Johnson’s death scene comes in Quicksilver Avengers: Age of Ultron even appears as part of the “previously on” summary at the beginning of the episode.

While setting up the X-Men will likely be a factor in Marvel’s Phase 4, more relevant to that WandaVision examines Scarlet Witch’s grief and increasing instability, which is why she brought Pietro back. He may not look like he once did, but he is still her brother rather than a completely different person. There is still room for it WandaVision to further set up the X-Men, however, whether that’s from the Fox movies, maybe with a Magneto cameo, or more likely with new castings. Marvel will definitely want to do its own thing when it comes to mutants, so a fresh start makes more sense than making the existing movies canon.
