COVID NYC Vaccine Update: Pharmacies Get Vaccine, Mayor Expands Seniors Access

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – Biden’s administration is shipping the COIVD-19 vaccine directly to pharmacies, which began administering doses on Friday.

In New York City, that means an initial shipment of 26,000 doses, 500 of which each to 250 Duane Reades, Walgreens, Rite Aids and Costcos.

Outside of the city, CFS is also involved.

Mayor Bill de Blasio also announced a three-pronged plan to vaccinate homebound seniors and the essential home care workers who care for them.

Early next week, the city will launch local senior vaccination clinics and, with the arrival of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in March, run a vaccination campaign for homebound seniors.

To minimize risk to homebound seniors throughout the month of February, the city is aiming to vaccinate 25,000 homecare workers in the coming month, with special arrangements in the areas where they live and work.

“We are moving heaven and earth to get our elderly neighbors vaccinated,” said de Blasio. “Now we’re bringing vaccines to seniors in their communities so we make sure our vaccines get to those who need them the most.”

To meet seniors where they are, the city will set up vaccine clinics in DFTA Retirement Communities and HPD Senior Buildings. Two on-site vaccination clinics will open the week of February 15, with additional sites to be identified and prioritized in the coming weeks:

–Warbasse Cares Program (2844 Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn)
–Morningside Retirement & Health Services (100 LaSalle Street, Morningside Heights)

The news comes as New York State reports the lowest positivity rate since late November and as indoor dining restaurants with 25% capacity are reopening in New York City.

In all respects, outdoor dining in the dead of a cold, snowy winter has been a dismal failure for most of the city’s restaurants.

“The most helpful thing is to safely eat indoors again,” said Eric Adams, president of Brooklyn Borough.
