Alex Trebek‘s last big “Jeopardy!” champion has died at the young age of just 24 years.
Brayden Smith, who scored a winning streak of 5 games and more than $ 115,000 in winnings as Trebek’s era came to an end, died unexpectedly last Friday in his hometown of Las Vegas. The cause of death is unclear.
Brayden’s lifelong dream had always been to be in “Jeopardy!” … and the young man, who reportedly tried to get on the show at least a dozen times, left a lasting impression on Trebek and fans.
His run was so impressive that he drew comparisons to the greats James Holzhauer because he also had a knack for finding the Daily Doubles and making huge bets when he did.
Trebek was very impressed with Brayden’s prolific run … calling him “Billy Buzzsaw” for his ability to dismantle the competition. Trebek also said, “Very impressive. I don’t know what to say.” Brayden appeared in the last shows Trebek ever hosted before, of course he died of pancreatic cancer.
Brayden, who died about a month after his episode aired, had been looking forward to participating in the show’s Tournament of Champions. He had just graduated from UNLV last year with a degree in economics and had hoped to study law and become an American attorney.
The family has asked for donations on behalf of Brayden here … a fund that benefits Nevada students continuing their education.
RIP, champion.
