The 110 Mass. Communities Most at Risk for COVID-19 Transmission

The number of communities in Massachusetts with the highest risk of coronavirus transmission continues to decline with 110 cities and towns hitting the state’s “ red zone ” this week.

That is 43 cities and towns less compared to last week and a big drop from the end of January when more than 200 communities were on the list.

The state’s average daily number of cases in the past two weeks is also declining. It currently sits at 38.5 cases per 100,000 residents, a yellow designation, compared to last week’s average of 48.9 cases per 100,000 residents in the preceding two weeks, putting the state in the red zone.

A community is given a red indication based on a number of factors. According to the state, small communities with fewer than 10,000 residents are placed in the red zone if they have had more than 25 cases in total in the past two weeks. For communities between 10,000 and 50,000 people, a red zone designation is given if the community has 10 or more mean cases per 100,000 residents and if the positivity rate is greater than or equal to 5 percent. For communities over 50,000, they need 10 or more cases per 100,000 residents and a positivity rate of 4 percent or higher.
