Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday that he wants to add rocket propellers to the four-seat Roadster sports car to make it float.
What happened: Talk to Joe Rogan on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast streamed Spotify Technology SAs (NYSE: SPOT) service, the entrepreneur said, “I want [the Roadster] to float, and I was trying to figure out how to make this thing float without, you know, killing people. “
“Maybe it can float like three feet off the ground, or something. When you plummet, it blows out the suspension, but you don’t die. “
Musk also touched on the yoke-like steering wheel added to the new Model S and Model X vehicles announced last month.
Rogan asked if those steering wheels were legal, to which he replied in the affirmative, “I mean, they use a yoke in Formula 1.”
Musk also provided some details about a possible future Tesla electric van, saying the automaker could install solar panels – thanks to the van’s flat and large surface.
“You could also have a roof where it is solar powered, and then when it is stationary, [the roof] goes out and provides shade, and maybe triples your area or something. If you are tripling the area, and you have a large, flat surface, then maybe you could start charging enough where you start getting about 30 miles a day, ”said Musk.
Why it matters: Last September, Musk created a buzz when he smoked weed with the podcast host.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said last month it had contacted Tesla about the possible use of the yoke steering wheel for the Model S, CNet reported.
The agency said it “cannot determine whether the wheel meets the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.” If the car manufacturer violates the standards, the yoke may not be allowed.
A number of companies are working on electric delivery vans, including Arrival, which wants to merge with CIIG Merger Corp (NASDAQ: CIIC) and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) -backed Rivian.
