Robinson Canó is under investigation for a waste collection contract

Santo Domingo, RD

Major League Baseball player Robinson Canó is under investigation in the Dominican Republic for possible irregularities in a garbage collection contract awarded to a company in his name.

The Directorate General for Public Procurement (DGCP) reported Thursday that it is investigating a contract signed between the city of San Pedro de Macorís, Canó’s hometown, and the company RJC Clear.

Canó’s company won the contract just five months after it was founded, when more than seven years of experience was required.

This, “along with the warnings received, warrants a more in-depth investigation” to “identify possible violations of the law and determine the legal implications for the emergency procedure conducted,” said a statement from the DGCP.

In addition, during the process, “unreasonable deadlines were checked at all stages of the process, from receipt of offers, as subsequent stages take place on the same day and with a difference of minutes”, contrary to what the public has stated. Procurement and contract law , the note added.

Canó is second baseman for the New York Mets, was a World Series champion in 2009 and just won the Caribbean Series with the Dominican Republic’s Aguilas Cibaeñas.

The 38-year-old will not be allowed to play in the Major Leagues next season due to suspension, because he has violated anti-doping policy for the second time in his career.
