“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn appears to approve the online bashing of “The Mandalorian” actress Gina Carano after she was fired by Disney for social media posts – despite his 2018 resignation from directing “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 “under similar circumstances.
A viral crowd leading a #FireGinaCarano campaign saw her successfully expelled from the hit Disney + series on Wednesday after sharing a post on Instagram comparing America’s current political divide to the hostility that led to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.
GINA CARANO LOOKS BACK TALK FOR SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS, ‘CURRENTLY NO EFFICIENCY’ BY ‘STAR WARS’
Lucasfilm, which is owned by Disney, said in a statement obtained by Variety that Carano “is not currently employed by” the company.
Fans and defenders of Carano used social media, pointing to several examples of hypocrisy, from a tweet by her “Mandalorian” co-star Pedro Pascal comparing Nazi concentration camps to US housing facilities for migrants and Disney’s ongoing business ties to China, even as the The Beijing government is holding Uyghur Muslims in concentration camps. The studio even thanked officials from Xinjiang Province, where the camps are located, in the credits of “Mulan.”

Amidst the online battle, a tweet defending Gunn drew and Carano grabbed the filmmaker’s attention.
“Oh f * ck don’t drag @JamesGunn into this unfortunate trending topic,” entrepreneur Olga Kay wrote before celebrating Carano’s resignation.
Gunn “liked” that tweet.

In July 2018, resurfaced tweets made Gunn joke about rape and child abuse.

“I like it when little boys touch me in my crazy place,” read a tweet.
“The best thing about being raped is when you’re done rape and it’s like you feel this great, don’t get raped!” Gunn wrote in another.
“The Expendables were so manly I fucked the shit out of the little pussy boy next to me! The boys ARE back in town!” he joked in a 2010 tweet.

Gunn explained at the time that his tweets were attempts to be “provocative” and “taboo” and that he regretted it repeatedly over the years. However, Disney fired Gunn from directing “Guardians” amid public uproar, though he was later reinstated as the Marvel movie director in March 2019. The film is currently scheduled for release in 2023.
