Already a powerful tool, the search bar in Gmail, especially when using the advanced filters, now shows corresponding email aliases in results.
When you search for an email address in Gmail, we’ll now show you all the emails associated with that specific address and all the aliases it belongs to.
An email alias is simply an “alternate address to receive email” often used for: official name changes, preferred names and as a result of a new brand name of a company, acquisitions or subsidiaries.
Results are retrieved from the lines to, from, cc and bcc, as well as whether they occur anywhere in the message body. Google explains that this feature eliminates the need for users to maintain a continuous list of email changes. Labels are not affected.
This change makes searching easier and more comprehensive results, as users don’t have to remember all of someone’s aliases and perform multiple searches for each.
That said, users can still search for exact accounts by using quotes around the address in question. Email aliases in Gmail searches are rolled out to the following Workspace levels:
Available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus customers, and G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits customers
