Hackers have reportedly sold the game’s source code and other stolen information Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 studio CD Projekt Red (CDPR). Cybersecurity company Kela has released screenshots of a message on the Exploit hack forum allegedly posted by the attackers, stating that they received an offer for the data from outside the forum. They added that they closed the auction at the buyer’s request. Cybersecurity Twitter account vx-underground then confirmed that the auction was closed.
On Tuesday, CDPR announced that it was the victim of a ransomware attack in which hackers had collected ‘certain data’ from the company. It posted a ransom note from the hackers, claiming to have access to the source code of the studio’s most popular games, as well as internal legal, HR and financial documents. CDPR said it would not give in to the demands and negotiate with the hackers, even if that meant circulating the stolen data online.
It is not known who bought the data or for how much it was sold. However, it was thought that the auction had included source code for it Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales spin-off, The Witcher 3, a ray-traced version of The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and copies of the company’s internal records. That is according to screenshots posted by vx-underground. The auction followed a leak of the source code for Projekt Red’s CD virtual card game Gwent, which was verified by Vice.
Kela previously reported that the starting price for the auction was $ 1 million, with a buy-now price of $ 7 million. These terms were subsequently also verified by vx-underground.
Although the hackers have not been officially named, a security researcher said Wired he believed it involved the use of HelloKitty ransomware, which had also been used to hack a Brazilian energy company called CEMIG.
A spokesperson for CD Projekt Red did not return immediately The edge‘s request for comment. However, the company said it earlier this week Vice it is still “actively investigating” the incident.
