Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Wednesday that about 20,000 pregnant women have received the COVID-19 vaccine “with no red flags.”
The top infectious disease expert announced the update during a White House briefing on Wednesday, adding that both the CDC and the FDA are monitoring the situation.
The guidelines for pregnant women who received the coronavirus vaccine varied as they did not participate in Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccine studies.
But Fauci said on Wednesday that clinical trials of the COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women and children are underway, with more to come.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that pregnant women discuss with their healthcare provider whether they want to get vaccinated.
However, the World Health Organization does not recommend pregnant women to get the COVID-19 vaccine unless they are at high risk of exposure.
