With scholarships still open in the 2021 recruiting course, Ed Orgeron said he planned to move to the transfer portal to meet immediate needs in next year’s roster, circling the linebacker position as a key focus.
Good news came on Wednesday.
After getting an autograph on Tuesday from Top 100 prospect Brian Thomas Jr., the Tigers got another big piece for the 2021 season on Wednesday.
Clemson linebacker Mike Jones Jr.., which entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Jan. 25, has committed to LSU. He will be eligible to play immediately in 2021.
The former four-star recruit played in nine games for Clemson last season, combining two interceptions and a half bag for 26 tackles (four for loss). During his freshman season in 2019, Jones recorded 18 tackles, including three tackles for loss.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Jones arrived at Clemson as the No. 210 overall player of the 2018 class. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, the IMG Academy linebacker was the No. 15 outer linebacker prospect in the country and the No. 36 recruit from the United States. state of Florida.
LSU now has only one available scholarship spot in the 2021 class, which can be used on the transfer portal or an unsigned high school or junior college prospect. Orgeron could also choose to carry any additional scholarships into the 2022 class.
LSU’s 2021 class currently ranks # 3 in the 247Sports Team Rankings, behind Alabama and Ohio State only.
The Tigers lost a starting linebacker from the 2020 roster with Jabril Cox’s decision to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. LSU returns two middle linebackers who rotated as starters at Damone Clark and Micah Baskerville, as well as reserves Josh White and Antoine Sampah, who were both true freshmen this past season. LSU signed a pair of linebackers in four-star Greg Penn III and Navonteque Strong, who was ranked as the No. 1 junior college linebacker prospect.
