Mary Wilson, originally a member of the Supremes, dies

Mary Wilson, the oldest member of the group The Supremes, died in Las Vegas at the age of 76.

Agent Jay Schwartz said Wilson died at his Las Vegas home on February 8, 2021, and the cause was initially unknown.

Wilson, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard were the members of the successful original group. Cindy Birdsong replaced Ballard in 1967, and Wilson stayed with the band until the Motown record company officially dissolved it in 1977.

The group’s first track to reach the top spot with a million records sold was released on June 17, 1964.

“I remember that instead of going home by bus, we flew,” Wilson told The Associated Press in 2014. “It was our first flight. We had a great hit.”

It would be the first of five consecutive numbers 1, followed by “Baby Love”, “Come See About Me”, “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “Back in My Arms Again”. the group included “You Can’t Haast Love”, “Up the Ladder to the Roof” and “Love Child.”

“I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of a great member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of The Supremes,” Motown founder Berry Gordy said in a statement Monday night, Variety Magazine said. “It was always said that the Supremes were Motown’s friends.”
