San Diego County’s first COVID-19 death was confirmed by the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) Friday. The patient was a 10-year-old boy with underlying health problems.
His death has been characterized as “another sad milestone” amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 450,000 people in the US, 43,000 in California and 2,700 in San Diego County.
“Our deepest condolences go out to this child’s family and friends,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, public health officer. “The death of this boy is a bleak reminder that this pandemic is affecting everyone in our community regardless of age, and we must do everything we can to protect each other and slow the spread of the virus.”
The county has reported only two COVID-19-related deaths involving patients between the ages of 10 and 19, and none between 0 and 9. Those two deaths account for about 0.1% of the province’s 2,777 total deaths. .
