Dr. Anthony Fauci recently explained how to eat safely in a restaurant during the new coronavirus pandemic.
What is happening?
Fauci told CNN on Tuesday evening that people should be careful about eating in restaurants during the pandemic. But, he said, it can be done if it is “done carefully.”
- “When you dine indoors, you do it at a distance from each other so that people don’t sit next to each other,” he told CNN on Tuesday night.
- He said that “good air flow” is important. And, he said, you will want to avoid being in places where you take the breath of others.
Fauci told CNN he is aware of the economic problems restaurants are facing as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
- ‘You know, people sometimes think that public health officials are not aware of the economic considerations. Not at all – I mean, we’re very empathetic about that, ”said Fauci. “But we still need to enforce public health measures if we are to wrap our arms around this outbreak.”
Study about food in restaurants
A September study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that eating out in a restaurant can be riskier than other activities.
- The study found that those who tested positive for COVID-19 were twice as likely as those who tested negative to say they went to a restaurant before becoming infected, as I wrote for Deseret News.
- The CDC defined a restaurant as “any area designated by the restaurant, including indoor, patio, and outdoor seating.”
Findings from a case-control study of symptomatic outpatients from 11 US health care facilities showed that close contact with individuals with known COVID-19 or who went to locations offering on-site food and beverage outlets was associated with COVID-19- positivity. “
