The OnePlus 9 Pro can come with a Hasselblad camera

The upcoming OnePlus 9 Pro looks like it will be a big step forward in the camera hardware bet with an alleged prototype appearing with Hasselblad branding.

A long-standing complaint about OnePlus devices is undoubtedly poor camera performance. That’s all despite the inclusion of normally high-quality sensors and fairly capable internal parts. A new video courtesy of Dave2D has given us an early close-up of another prototype OnePlus 9 series device with what appears to be Hasselblad branding on the rear camera setup.

A jointly developed lens partnership is of course never always a guarantee that a camera will match the perceived hype. Hasselblad’s rich history as a market leader in the production of medium format cameras means that this could be the sign of a huge leap in quality for the upcoming OnePlus 9 Pro. You can watch this prototype device in the video below:

In the short video, we get a look at a four-camera setup, with the round iPhone-style bumps joined by that Hasselblad logo and two other lenses. At this stage it’s unclear what the setup consists of, but let’s hope there are some big bumps about the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 48-megapixel Sony IMX689.

Previous rumors suggested that the OnePlus 9 series may come with lenses co-developed with Leica, but it looks like Hasselblad will improve perception of the flagships’ upcoming camera quality. The camera’s user interface includes a “Tilt-Shift” mode that refers to a moving lens to create the distortion-free images typical of this type of photography.

The last smartphone company to work with Hasselblad was Motorola, with a Moto Z3 add-on that enhanced the capabilities of the distinctly average camera system out there. That turned out not to be a great success, but let’s hope that this combination is more like the Huawei-Leica partnership than the Moto-Hasselblad team.

Other notable things that Dave2D reveals is a curved screen, with a slight difference in the shape of the frame for the warning slider and the power button. It’s not clear why this would be the case, but it’s interesting to say the least. Some strange aspects of the prototype include an “About Phone” section with 11 GB RAM but no processor information. This will likely prevent further leaked information.

Does this finally give the OnePlus 9 a camera that can compete with the very best in the industry? Let us know what you think about this alleged partnership in the comments below.
