A Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach is under investigation after he was involved in a car accident in which a 5-year-old child sustained life-threatening injuries.
Britt Reid, the outside linebackers coach and son of head coach Andy Reid, got into a car accident near Kansas City Chiefs’ stadium on Thursday, says a Kansas City Missouri Police Department report obtained by ESPN.
The collision took place between three vehicles: Reid’s and two others parked on the side of the road. One car ran out of gas on the driveway to Interstate 435, so the driver called on family members for help.
While the two were parked along the side of the driveway, Reid hit the car that ran out of gas and then drove the second car to the rear, injuring a 4-year-old and a 5-year-old with life-threatening injuries. . Both children have been taken to hospital, the report said.
A police officer’s statement obtained by ESPN says the on-site officer could smell “a faint odor of alcoholic beverages” and see that Reid’s eyes were bloodshot.
Reid, who has a history of drunk driving, admitted to having a few drinks before driving, along with prescribed Adderall, the statement says. Reid eventually complained of stomach problems and is now in hospital.
Reid’s injuries are not unknown, but he could be in the hospital for days, a source told ESPN. Another source said Reid will not be attending the Superbowl with his team on Sunday.
Police told ESPN the charges won’t be filed until next week, when he receives it. None of the others in the car accident suffered life-threatening injuries.
“The organization has been notified of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid,” the Chiefs said in a statement. “We are in the process of collecting information, and we will not comment further at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with all concerned.”
