WandaVision episode 5 spoilers to follow.
In one of WandaVision’s In the most heartbreaking moments, Wanda tells her twin boys, “We can’t turn death back, no matter how sad it makes us.” That’s not great news for all the Sparky dies out there, whether you’re a fan of cute dogs or the Tom King ‘Vision’ comics that this little beast is inspired on.
However, what Wanda is saying is not entirely true. Sure, the mechanics of Vision’s resurrection have yet to be determined, but we do know that Maximoff is somehow responsible for his return, resuscitating his robotic body like a creepy puppeteer.
And then of course there is Which end. We had suspected for a while that Pietro would come back to life in the MCU, because if Wanda’s husband can come back, why not her dead brother too?
What we didn’t necessarily expect – internet leaks aside – was that this version of Pietro wouldn’t be the one Wanda fought next to in the Avengers. In fact, this one Quicksilver hasn’t even made an appearance in the MCU so far, something that was only made possible very recently thanks to the Disney and Fox merger.
But we are leading the way. First of all, who is this “long-lost brother” and why does he look like Evan Peters? Wanda certainly looked confused, and many viewers probably shared that feeling too.
As Marvel fans will remember, Aaron Taylor-Johnson starred Pietro Maximoff Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the on-screen speedster’s time passed pretty quickly as Ultron killed him before the credits rolled.
The Pietro that appears here WandaVision Immediately claims to be Wanda’s brother, and he seems to recognize her too, so why hasn’t Aaron Taylor-Johnson recast in the role? A year before Marvel brought the silver-haired speedster to life onscreen, Fox’s X-Men introduced their own version, played by American Horror Story’s Evan Peters.
For years, the MCU and Fox’s X-Men universe were unable to cross over with each other for boring legal reasons, separating characters who regularly hang out together in the comics.
This usually kept things separate on screen, but Quicksilver was an uncommon case, as he is both a Mutant and an Avenger in the source material. Since this was complicated stuff, these blurry lines allowed Marvel and Fox to both create their own unique versions of the same character.
However, that all changed a few years ago when Disney and Fox merged, finally allowing Marvel to integrate long-lost characters like the X-Men into their world. Fans have been speculating on this for quite some time, but finally, WandaVision has now confirmed that mutants are officially part of the MCU. Or has it?
More on that later, but for now. the question remains: why would Wanda revive another version of her brother? Did she just “rearrange” it, as Darcy suggests? Was Aaron Taylor-Johnson just busy that day?
Right now, there are two prevailing theories, both more enchanting than even Wanda herself. The first possibility is that this isn’t actually Pietro and Marvel is just fooling us into casting someone who once played this character for another studio. And if that is the case, we cannot imagine that the intentions of this “Pietro” are good.
WandaVision’s the last episode does a lot of hard work to suggest that Wanda is the MCU’s new Big Bad, and yes, the way she manipulates innocent people is unforgivable, but it still feels like someone else is manipulating her in the same way too. After all, Agnes clearly knows more than she reveals, and while Vision thinks Wanda is in control, she was even surprised by Pietro’s arrival.
This suggests that Evan Peters is playing someone else who is not under the spell of Wanda. When she brought Vision back to life, it was a deliberate move on her part, but that’s not the case here, and shouldn’t she focus on bringing Pietro back? Sure, he could just be another manifestation of her subconscious, but if that were true, wouldn’t he look like Aaron Taylor-Johnson?
Fans have suspected someone else here is pulling the strings for a while, and an obvious pick from the comics is Mephisto, Marvel’s version of Satan. This demonic entity has previously manipulated comic book Wanda in an attempt to harness her power, and her children’s story is inseparable from his. Then there’s Master Pandemonium, a former Hollywood star who now carries out Mephisto’s bids with demons as limbs. Yes really.
Both characters have caused Wanda untold suffering in the comics and destroyed her hopes for a happy ending to call her own, so it’s entirely possible Evan Peters is actually playing one of these villains in disguise. And the actual arrival of the devil in the MCU would be a major game changer, right?
But then, that still does not explain why Evan Peters appears instead of Aaron. If this isn’t just stunt casting, the most likely explanation for all of this seems like he actually plays Pietro, but the one we first met in the X-Men movies.
DC’s Flash can use its super speed to race between alternate realities, but Quicksilver is not known to use its powers in this way, whether you’re talking about Marvel’s Pietro, Fox’s Pietro, or even comic book Pietro. With that in mind, it seems more likely that Wanda actually pulled this version of her brother straight out of the X-Men universe and the MCU.
This episode goes to great lengths to confirm that Wanda can rewrite reality, so it’s possible she unwittingly dragged a different version of Pietro to Westview. Wanda can only bring Vision back to life because it is synthetic and they both share a connection with the Mind Stone. Bringing to life a real human could exist beyond the realms of even Wanda’s power set, so instead of bringing her Pietro back to life, she has (unconsciously) scoured the multiverse for another Pietro who survived.
Multiverse shenanigans have been on the map for a while. We are not only sure about that Deapool 3 will bring Ryan Reynolds to the MCU, but it has also been confirmed that previous Spider-Men from the Sony universe will also meet Tom Holland’s Spidey. And that is no coincidence Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive before then …
Knowing that Wanda has been confirmed to appear in that movie as well, it makes sense that any of Wanda’s interference with reality could disrupt the fabric of reality in general, requiring Doctor Strange to step in and help restore the multiverse before it is too late.
With multiple Spider-Men and one attached Fantastic four movie coming our way, the X-Men are definitely going to rub shoulders with the Avengers sooner rather than later, and it looks like WandaVision is the key to unlocking all of that.
If that is true, it is too early to say whether Evan Peters will last long as a “new” Pietro. And frankly, after this show, we are a little concerned about the future of Vision as well. After Sparky’s death, Billy and Tommy tell their mom that “Family is forever,” but we’re not so sure Wanda will get the happy ending she deserves …
