Law & Order: Organized Crime will follow Stabler when he returns to the New York Police Department to head the organized crime department.

Stabler returns to the NYPD after suffering “a devastating personal loss,” as he tries “to rebuild his life.”

Part of his “rebuilding” includes the formation of an “elite task force that will take apart the most powerful criminal syndicates in the city one by one.”

Meloni will star alongside Dylan McDermott and Tamara Taylor, although no details have been given about their characters.

Law & Order: Organized Crime was created by Dick Wolf, who will executive produce with Ilene Chaiken, Terry Miller, Fred Berner, Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski.

The show was originally announced in late March 2020, and it was originally scheduled to debut last fall, although some complications did arise.

In October, showrunner Matt Olmstead left the show amid creative challenges, pushing the show off the fall schedule.

The network announced in December that Ilene Chaiken, creator of The L Word, had come on board to step in as a showrunner after serving as a showrunner on Empire.

McDermott joined the cast last week, and Taylor came on board this week, although it’s unclear when production will start.

Meloni played alongside Hargitay on SVU from the start in 1999, with the detectives’ report making them one of the most dynamic duos on television.

SVU is now in its 22nd season, the longest-running live-action primetime program in television history.

NBC and Dick Wolf Productions signed a new five-year deal in February 2020, including unprecedented three-season renewals for SVU, along with Wolf’s trio of Windy City shows – Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and Chicago Med.
