After we added a ‘Troubleshooting’ menu last month, Google Meet now has a ‘green room’ before the video call to ‘quickly preview what you will look like to others before entering’. It is available on the Internet and allows you to monitor peripherals and network status.
You can use this new functionality to check that peripherals are properly configured and corrected, to verify that your network connectivity is good, and to understand the impact of noise cancellation on your audio (if available for your account).
Before joining a meeting, there is a new “Check your audio and video” button below your video feed. This “green room” opens a nearly full screen camera window and displays “Your devices” below. You can choose from different microphones, speakers and cameras. It shows you an example of the best setup and catch:
- An accidentally muted microphone
- A secondary monitor with a missing headphone or speaker connection
- Other audio issues, such as poor sound quality, audio that is too loud, or your microphone amplifying background noise
If problems are detected, Google Meet provides tips and troubleshooting steps, such as “allow your browser to use the microphone or camera.”
This Google Meet video preview is now rolling out to the following users, as well as personal accounts in our tests:
Available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus customers, and G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits customers
