While Tesla seems to be getting all the credit for it lately, car manufacturers have left Easter egg functions on cars forever. In order not to be left in the dust by the Jeep Wagoneer with its Detroit map in the glass roof or Tesla fart mode, the new Ford Mustang Mach-E also gets a secret.

The Easter egg appears to have been first reported by Teslarati.com last week, but Jalopnik reader James sent his own photos of the position he discovered privately during a pre-delivery inspection for work at a Ford dealership in Wisconsin.

The photos show a line of text printed into the metal body of the Mach-E electric motor that reads “Electric Ponies Live Here”, as a nod to the vague branding connection of this all-electric crossover on the street with the iconic Mustang sports car .

I would like to think that Ford should print the message on the outside of the engine case to help the dealer service personnel see that there was something different about this car than they were used to, and to be careful. But I doubt that is true.

The new Mach-E is offered in three powertrain configurations. A large 282 hp electric motor is mounted on the rear axle for rear-wheel drive. A large rear engine can be combined with a smaller 67 hp electric motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive. The powerful option of two large engines offers four-wheel drive and a combined power output of 480 hp.

James says this is the first and only Easter egg he’s seen on the Mach-E so far, and there doesn’t seem to be any word of any other if they exist. Motor Trend highlights the volume control on the inner screen of the Mach-E like a bit of an Easter egg, as it makes the user think it’s a functional rotary knob when not connected to anything.

But I’m not sure that counts. I like to hunt my Easter eggs and be surprised when I find them, you know, as the “hunt” is meant to be. Like what Ford did here. However, I would have liked the Mach-E’s egg to be anything more than text on the engine. Like maybe a really fat horse hidden under the trunk or something.
