President Biden on Tuesday offered his condolences to the families of two FBI agents who had been killed on duty in Florida earlier that day.
“I can only imagine how these families are feeling today,” Biden said in the Oval Office before signing executive orders on immigration. “One of the things if you’re in an army combat zone, or if you’re an FBI agent or a police officer, every family … fears the possibility of a call, that call.”
“My heart hurts for the families,” he added, noting that he hasn’t tried to contact them yet. “They are risking their lives and it’s a great price to pay.”
Two FBI special agents, Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger, were fatally shot on Tuesday and three others were injured while executing a federal court-ordered search warrant in a crime against children in Sunrise, Fla., The FBI said. The subject of the investigation is also dead.
Every day, FBI special agents put themselves in danger to protect the American people. Special Agent Alfin and Special Agent Schwartzenberger were examples of heroism in defense of their country today, ”FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement.
The FBI will always honor their ultimate sacrifice and will be forever grateful for their courage. We will continue to support our FBI family and the families of these special agents over the next few days, and we will put all the resources we need to get through this together, ”Wray continued.
The shooting is one of the deadliest in FBI history; the agency has not lost an agent in the industry since 2008.

“I know the FBI is gathering information on how this happened and what happened,” Biden said in the Oval Office.
The FBI’s inspection division is investigating the shooting, which took place at around 6 a.m. in the Water Terrace apartments outside Fort Lauderdale. Two of the injured officers were treated in hospital and were said to be in stable condition.
