A GoldenEye 007 remaster was in the works for Xbox 360, but never saw the light of day.
Now, a two-hour game of the remaster has revealed important details of the game that never were.
YouTuber Graslu00 uploaded a video with a full playthrough of the game’s entire campaign and even some multiplayer footage. Graslu00 was able to play the game through Xenia, an emulator that can run Xbox 360 games on PC.
The original GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64 was a revolutionary milestone in video games. Before GoldenEye, the FPS genre was seen as something exclusive to the PC.
GoldenEye was part of the early vanguard of console FPS games that proved the genre could work with joypads. In fact, many gamers cite GoldenEye for N64 as the title that introduced them to first-person shooters.
In 2008, Microsoft announced that a GoldenEye 007 remaster would be coming to the Xbox 360 (thanks, VGC). But due to a complicated dispute involving multiple companies, the project never landed on the Xbox Live Arcade as planned. This despite the fact that the production of the game was almost finished.
“The main reason it didn’t happen was because there were too many stakeholders,” Grant Kirkhope, a composer at GoldenEye, told VGC. “Microsoft, Nintendo and EON could never agree on the terms, and that’s before you even start considering getting all the original film actors to reuse their similarities.”
Unfortunately, this all means that an official GoldenEye 007 remaster will never take place. But at least thanks to Graslu00’s video, fans got a glimpse of what could have been.
