Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law and former White House adviser nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to normalize Israel’s relations with other countries in the Middle East, a process that led to the “Abraham Accords” signed last year.

Ivanka Trump’s husband was suggested by Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard University professor and former attorney for Donald Trump, when he defended him in his first impeachment trial in early 2020.

There are many people (parliamentarians, ministers, former award winners, university professors) who are authorized by regulation to nominate candidates. The Nobel Institute has a duty to accept them, although that does not indicate that it supports them.

Dershowitz stated in his nomination letter that the Abraham Accords (signed by Sudan, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to normalize diplomatic ties with Israel) are the unique 2020 event for the award. “They are the promise of an even broader Middle East peace between Israel, the Palestinians and other Arab nations. They are a giant step towards bringing peace and stability to the region, and even the world”, He stressed.

That’s why the lawyer nominated his second in addition to Kushner Avi Berkowitz, White House envoy to the Middle East. “Kushner and Berkowitz toured the region, meeting with leaders and their associates, advocating for peace, and recording all the details,” the letter added.

He also nominated David Friedman (former US Ambassador to Israel) and Ron Dermer (former Israeli ambassador to the US), insisting that “these men played a particularly important role”.

According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the award is to be given “to the person who has worked more or better for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of established armies, and the celebration and promotion of peace agreements.” The decision is in the hands of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which consists of five members determined by that country’s parliament

Kushner will “compete” against Donald Trump himself, who was nominated by a far-right Norwegian lawmaker months ago when the 2020 list deadline had already closed.

Other well-known candidates include the World Health Organization, Reporters Without Borders and environmentalist Greta Thunberg. Only if those nominating a person or organization make them public can the identity of the candidates become known, as the Norwegian Nobel Committee only publishes the total number of candidates and does not confirm the names until 50 years later.

In recent years, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the World Food Program (2020), to Abiy Ahmed Ali, from Ethiopia (2019), to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, from Congo and Iraq (2018), to the Campaign International for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (2017) and Juan Manuel Santos, from Colombia (2016).

The United States is the country with the most differences (20), followed by the United Kingdom (12) and France (9).
