Google’s weather frog spotted on smart displays

Google is testing a new smart assistant display wallpaper where a cartoon frog enjoys or interacts with the weather in real time. The character, Froggy, was previously a fixture in Google’s weather search results, and has also been featured as a minor character in several Google Doodles. Now 9to5Google reports that the beast is randomly popping up as a new “Picture Frame” option for the smart displays for users on Reddit and Twitter, where it appears alongside existing wallpapers, such as images displayed from your Google Photos account.

The software describes the screen saver as “a sweet frog to give you an animated weather experience”. When enabled, the display shows the current weather, a two-day forecast and an animation of Froggy in current conditions. 9to5Google notes that these animations feature Froggy sunbathing when the weather is good, or hiding under a plant pot when it rains.

Froggy has been appearing on smart screens since September last year. If more widely available, the wallpaper will appear as an option in response to the voice command “Hey Google, change photo frame”.
