The Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index has named Tesla one of the best workplaces for LGBTQ equality in 2021. The award was placed on the HRC’s recently published Corporate Equality Index 2021, which assesses workplaces for equality between lesbian, gay, bisexual , transgender and gay people.
The announcement was shared on Tesla’s LinkedIn page, where the electric vehicle manufacturer noted that it is proud to have achieved a perfect score of 100% in the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index six years in a row.
As noted by the Human Rights Campaign, the statistics for the 2021 Corporate Equality Index are based on four criteria: Workforce Protection (30 points); Inclusive benefits (30 points), support for an inclusive culture and corporate social responsibility (40 points) and responsible citizenship (-25 points for data on anti-LGBTQ practices).
A closer look at each statistic shows a focus on special programs that ensure workers of all genders and sexual orientations are treated equally. For example, in the Workforce Protections criteria, companies are assessed based on the existence of policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity or expression for all activities. In the Inclusive Benefits criteria, companies are judged based on whether the medical and soft benefits are the same for all genders and sexual orientations.
To support an inclusive culture and corporate social responsibility, companies must implement a number of internal LGBTQ training and education programs, as well as outreach efforts to broaden the community. Contractors and suppliers should also not be discriminated against on the basis of their gender identity and / or sexual orientation.
Elon Musk’s disdain for the aesthetics of pronouns aside, Tesla’s equality programs meet the standards of the human rights campaign, allowing the electric car manufacturer to maintain its position as one of the United States’ top workplaces for the LGBTQ community. This is quite remarkable for a US-based carmaker as experienced carmakers such as Ford Motor Co. only got a score of 80 points and General Motors received 90 points in this year’s Corporate Equality Index. Even Berkshire Hathaway, a company headed by one of the world’s most esteemed philanthropists, scored a dismal 20 points.
