Lifelong Star Wars fan Katee Sackhoff revealed that she more or less portrayed Bo-Katan Kryze in Season 2 of The Mandalorian.
Lifetime Star Wars fan and action star Katee Sackhoff revealed how she got her live-action role of Bo-Katan Kryze in season 2 of The Mandalorian through well-timed jokes.
“When I was a little kid, I idolized male action stars because there weren’t many female action stars in the 80s,” the actor told the Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast. “We had the Sigourney Weaver’s, the Linda Hamilton’s, and the Lucy Lawless, but we also had Princess Leia who was smart and snappy and gorgeous and a ball smack and capable and caring and so well rounded.” She added: ‘So from a young age I loved Star Wars. “

Sackhoff added that she often joked with her agent that she would be playing a part in the Star Wars universe – no matter how small. “When they call me for a rock in one Star war‘s movie, I’ll be a rock just to be in this world,’ said the actor.
When she was offered to speak to Bo-Katan Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Sackhoff accepted the role without hesitation. ‘A female Mandalorian warrior? Uh, hello! ‘ she said. “I remember we did this several times, [Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni] and I’m joking, ‘Yanno, if this happens one day, she could exist in these worlds …’ ”
“I was always joking [Dave] because I never thought it would happen, “she said to Rosenbaum.” Of course they would rearrange it! They would hire Scarlett Johansson or something. Sackhoff added, “ But when Mandalorian came out and I saw him at Celebration, I was joking about Yanno Bo-Katan, wink wink, nudge, nudge, ‘I’ve been playing characters like this for 15 years, buddy!’ “
However, it didn’t get real for Sackhoff until they met The Mandalorian‘s creator Jon Favreau. “It took me halfway through the meeting to realize that he was actually talking about me doing Bo-Katan,” she said. “I remember sitting across from him, total out of body experience, and thinking to myself, ‘Is he? Oh, these are pictures of me on the wall! Oh what’s going on? He offered her the part in the room without asking Sackhoff to audition for the part.
Before playing Bo-Katan in season 2 of The Mandalorian, Sackhoff voiced the character in both the Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. But even after appearing in The Mandalorian, she’s still squeezing herself. “I’m amazed they didn’t just think about doing this,” she concluded. “But they believed in me and left me.”
Film directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney +.
