PlayStation 5 owners currently have no option to replace their console faceplates, but that could change in the near future thanks to CMP Shells’ red, black and blue options. Previously sold through the “Platestation.com” website, the third-party manufacturer was forced to cancel pre-orders in November, citing threats of legal action from Sony. However, the company has filed a patent for its design and will apparently be able to sell these faceplates without fear of legal action. According to the CMP website, the faceplates have a slightly different design than Sony’s, which also offers superior ventilation.
An Instagram video of the CMP Shells faceplates clamped to the PS5 can be found below.
The video shows that the covers should be quite easy to click! The company allows players to choose between records that are compatible with both the digital and physical versions of the console. In addition to the faceplate covers, customers have other options, including skins that allow them to change the color of the centerpiece and controller.
Only 1000 units of each scale are on offer and can be purchased for $ 49.99. Fans who want the controller to match the console can get a controller skin as part of a bundle with the shells and a vinyl centerpiece strip for $ 69.99. Centerpiece strips are also sold separately for $ 15 so buyers can mix and match if they wish. More information can be found here on the company’s website.
It will be interesting to see whether or not the legal issues have been completely resolved! CMP Shells seems confident that Sony will not be able to prevent the faceplates from being sold this time around, and expects them to ship at the end of February. It remains to be seen whether or not Sony is considering offering an official option for replacing the PS5 faceplates, but it looks like it may have been defeated this way. Those interested in buying the shells will have to keep their fingers crossed that everything will go as planned this time.
