(CNN) – Grammy-nominated experimental pop artist and producer Sophie Xeon, known publicly as SOPHIE, died Saturday morning at the age of 34 in a “terrible accident,” according to a statement from the artist’s record label, Transgressive.
“Tragically, our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident. True to his spirituality, he went to the full moon and slipped and fell, ” the statement said on Twitter.
SOPHIE died at her home in Athens, the Greek capital, at 4 a.m., the artist’s publicist said in a statement.
SOPHIE, a Glasgow-born trans rights activist, teamed up with Madonna in 2015 to co-produce the single “Bitch, I’m Madonna” and collaborated with Charli XCX on the Vroom Vroom EP.
SOPHIE’s 2018 debut album, “Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides,” earned the artist a Grammy nomination for Best Dance / Electronic Album.
“SOPHIE pioneered a new sound, one of the most influential artists of the past decade,” said the publicist’s statement.
“Not only because of the ingenious production and creativity, but also because of the message and visibility that has been achieved. An icon of liberation, ”he added.
Several artists paid tribute to the late artist, including British singer-songwriter Sam Smith, who posted on Twitter: ‘Heartbreaking news. The world has lost an angel. A true visionary and icon of our generation.
French pop artist Christine and the Queens described SOPHIE as “a great producer, a visionary, a reference”.
DJ and producer Erol Alkan tweeted, “Very sad news to hear about Sophie’s death.”
The SOPHIE publicist asked for privacy for the family and respect for the producer’s fans.
In an interview with the online magazine Paper in June 2018, Sophie talked about being trans. “For me, trans takes control so that your body is more aligned with your soul and mind, so the two don’t fight each other and fight for survival,” said the artist.
“On this Earth, you can get closer to how you feel your true essence is without the social pressure of having to fulfill certain traditional gender roles. It means that you are not a mother or a father, you are a person who looks at the world and feels the world. And somehow I feel like it’s more human and universal.
