UConn Health has canceled all COVID-19 first-dose vaccine appointments scheduled for the coming week due to a vaccine shortage.
Officials said there are shortages of the vaccine at the federal and state levels and their current weekly vaccination allocation is being cut.
All first dose appointments scheduled at UConn Health from Monday, February 1 through Monday, February 8, have been canceled.
The coronavirus vaccine has been shown to be safe, but some of the temporary side effects can feel quite harsh, especially when you get that second dose. Iahn Gonsenhauser, Chief Patient Safety Officer at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, described his own experience with “extreme” fever and chills after his second injection, so you know what to expect.
According to UConn Health, decisions will be made next week about whether more appointments should be canceled after Feb. 8.
UConn Health will not accept new first-dose appointments by phone or online.
Officials said anyone on a second dose appointment during that time frame should proceed as planned unless contacted by the COVID-19 vaccine program staff.
Those currently eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine include:
- Stage 1a: Persons working in healthcare settings at risk of direct or indirect exposure to patients or infectious material.
- Phase 1b: Persons aged 75 or older.
