Winter Weather NC: parts of central North Carolina to see frigid rain on Sunday morning from Triangle to areas north of I-85; I expect icy roads

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – On Sunday, expect a day of cold rain here in most of central North Carolina.

A winter weather advisory from the triangle to the north and west went into effect Saturday evening and will continue until Sunday afternoon.

Snow flurries started late from Saturday night to Sunday for areas north of the Triangle, but nothing like the snow that fell a few days ago.

A light winter mix is ​​possible early in the morning from the Triangle to the north from about 7am to 9am, with sleet, snow or sleet. After that, it should turn to rain. Up to .25 ” icing can occur north and west of I-85 and travel in these areas should be avoided in the morning if possible. Areas south of the Triangle will usually see freezing rain.

Although the effect on the Triangle should be minimal, freezing rain can cause some slippery spots on the roads if the temperature is around freezing.

North of I-85, the mix will last a bit longer, until maybe noon or 1pm. A light glaze of ice on raised surfaces is possible and you may even see a light layer of snow in some areas.
