Rep. Stephen Lynch will receive COVID-19 after the second vaccination

A Massachusetts congressman who received both doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine tested positive for the virus on Friday.

Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch previously tested negative attending the inauguration of President Joe Biden on January 20. He was retested after an employee in his Boston office contracted the virus earlier this week.

Pfizer said it could take up to seven days for protection against the second dose to kick in, NBC 10 Boston reported. Lynch’s office said he had received the second dose of vaccine prior to the January 20 inauguration, nine days before his positive test.

The Pfizer vaccine has been found to be 95 percent effective against the virus, although it has not been tested against the mutations that came from the UK and South Africa.

In the statement, his office said Lynch has no symptoms of COVID-19. He will quarantine himself and vote by proxy in Congress in the next week.

Lynch was the second congressional Democrat from Massachusetts to test positive in as many days. Rep. Lori Trahan said on Thursday that she tested positive after repeatedly testing negative.
