Steven Matz has goodbye message for Mets fans

Steven Matz apparently has no hard feelings that the New York Mets traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

“I will always be grateful to the Mets for the opportunity to play for my hometown team,” Matz tweeted in a farewell message on Thursday. “Thank you to Mets fans for all your support during my time in New York. And thanks to all my teammates and coaches – I wish you all the best of luck moving forward! “

Matz, 29, was shipped to the Blue Jays for three potential pitchers in the minor league. Earlier this season, Matz was offered a $ 5.2 million contract, but became expendable with recent additions from the Mets, including another left-handed, Joey Lucchesi of the Padres.

Matz also said he is looking forward to joining the Blue Jays and believes they could be an AL East contender.

“I am delighted to be able to join the @BlueJays and one of the most exciting teams in the game!” Matz tweeted. “I am pumped to do my part in helping this team return to the playoffs and you will get everything I have!”

The Mets, looking to complement their farm system, acquired three potential clients in the deal – right-handed pitchers Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and Josh Winckowski. Diaz was the group’s highest-ranked prospect, rated 26th in Toronto’s farming system according to MLB Pipeline.
