General Motors (GM) has marked 2035 as it plans to discontinue production of all diesel and gasoline engines worldwide.

Instead of tailpipe pollutants, the company will only sell electric vehicles – and will launch a new lineup for the occasion.

The US automaker announced the announcement on Thursday as part of its strategy to become carbon neutral by 2040, which also includes 100 percent renewable energy in manufacturing facilities.

The move comes weeks after GM changed its corporate logo and launched an electric vehicle marketing campaign to reshape its image as a clean car company.

The gas guzzler trade for electric vehicles has been a hot topic in recent years, and two US states, California and Massachusetts, have pledged to switch by 2035.

GM is the first automaker to step forward, and its stock saw a 7.4 percent rise Thursday morning as a result – it now has a market cap of about $ 73 billion.

The company plans to release 30 all-electric models worldwide by the mid-decade, and by the end of 2025, 40 percent of the company’s US models will be electric vehicles.

The EV will also be available at a variety of price points to cater to the general public.
