A public health care provider in Israel says 0.01 percent of people who have received two doses of coronavirus vaccine have tested positive for the virus.
Maccabi Healthcare Services is in charge of a program using the vaccine developed by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech. On Monday, it published the preliminary results of a study of 128,600 people who received two doses.
Maccabi says 20 of the recipients were infected with the virus a week after they received the second injection.
Maccabi says all 20 developed symptoms such as coughing and headaches, but none were hospitalized.
It adds that ten of them suffer from underlying conditions.
Maccabi says the data is preliminary but very encouraging.
Israel leads the world in delivering vaccinations quickly. By Tuesday, 2.7 million people, or more than 30 percent of the country’s population, had received their first shots and about 1.4 million had second shots.
Israel has reported that more than 600,000 of the 9 million people are infected with the virus. The country’s third lockdown is in effect until the end of this month.
Israel began vaccinating health workers and people 60 and older on December 19. The government plans to complete vaccinations for everyone 16 and older by the end of March.
