The battle for recovery from a lifelong eating disorder | News

As long as she can remember, from The Guardian Jenny Stevens has had a difficult relationship with food and is uncomfortable with her body. As she progressed through her teens into her 20s, these feelings intensified until she found herself skipping more and more meals while in the throes of anorexia.

She tells Rachel Humphreys that after she recognized the problem herself, it was far from easy to get the treatment she needed. Faced with an obstructive primary care physician, she could not get the referral she needed for specialist care. She was eventually referred to the eating disorders unit at Maudsley Hospital in South London, where she could begin the gradual path to recovery.
