Mexico is one of the 17 countries in the world to have reported more than 1 million cases of Covid-19. The number of newly confirmed deaths and cases has been on a steady rise across the country since the beginning of October, with recent daily figures being among the highest since the start of the pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has registered at least 1,752,347 cases of Covid-19 and 149,084 people in the country have died from the virus.

In worst-hit Mexico City, nearly 30 public hospitals report reaching 100% capacity, with many others approaching that figure. The town’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, has urged residents not to leave unless absolutely necessary.
In December, Mexico City and the state of Mexico were set to “red levels,” the highest measure of the country’s stoplight warning system for Covid-19 restrictions. The tougher measures included the closure of indoor dining, leaving only essential sectors such as transportation, energy, health and construction open.
Lopez Obrador, who rarely wears a mask, has been widely criticized for his handling of the pandemic.
Mexico has one of the lowest test rates of any major country in the world, and tests are often expensive and difficult to obtain.
