President Biden’s pledge to distribute 100 million injections of COVID-19 vaccines in his first 100 days in office does not mean that 100 million Americans will be vaccinated during that time, Dr. Anthony Fauci on Sunday.
With that number of animals vaccinated, only about 67 million people will be fully vaccinated, as both current vaccines require two injections, he said. on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
“Let me clarify that, because there was a little bit of understanding. What we’re talking about is 100 million shots at individuals, ”said the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
“At the end of a hundred days, you will have a number of people who have taken both shots, and some will still be taking their first shots,” added Fauci.
Fauci was confronted with an earlier interview in which he told CBS, “You know, the goal that has been set, which I think is completely achievable, is to get 100 million people vaccinated in the first 100 days.”
When asked at the time if that meant “both vaccines,” he replied, “Primary and boost, yes.”
Biden’s goal of “100 million” is already under fire for aiming too low – with data showing that the country was already putting out more than 1 million photos a day when he took office.
When asked last week why he wasn’t aiming higher, he snapped at a reporter, “Come on, give me a break, man! It’s a good start. “
The CDC said it had administered more than 20 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in the US as of Saturday.
20 million more have been distributed, the agency said.
