PewDiePie announces “big change” on its YouTube channel

PewDiePie has announced a major change to its YouTube channel, inspired by Corpse Husband, Dream, and a growing trend among popular streamers on Twitch and YouTube. After a two-week hiatus on YouTube, the platform’s most popular content creator is back. Leading up to his return, the King of YouTube teased a ‘big reveal’. As a follow-up to this scourge, PewDiePie released a new YouTube video today entitled “I’m Back With A Huge Announcement.” And as you might expect, the video is already trending and has nearly two million views. Of course, every PewDiePie upload delivers wild engagement, but this video in particular draws extra attention to the aforementioned announcement.

For those who haven’t seen the video, PewDiePie pulls a page from Dream, Corpse Husband, Pokimane and other streamers and YouTubers playbook and will now hide his identity behind an avatar. According to PewDiePie, he’s lost his self-facing camera and is doing the “reverse face reveal” to stay relevant.

“I’ve realized that the only way I can stay relevant at this point … it is necessary to do this,” PewDiePie said, clearly joking. Corpse Husband … no face camera, no face reveal, hugely popular. Dream … no face camera, no face reveal, hugely popular. “

At this point, the YouTuber hasn’t chosen a definitive avatar yet, but for most of the video, he’s used a temporary avatar, or more specifically the avatar below:

For now, it remains to be seen how permanent this change will be. In the video, PewDiePie asks fans for help finding and choosing an avatar, suggesting that the above avatar won’t last long at the very least. But again, it’s hard to estimate how long PewDiePie will last. In the video, he’s clearly joking and maybe joking about the trend, but it also looks like he’s going to keep the avatar for a while at least.
