Trump’s impeachment trial will begin in the second week of February

Washington – The second political trial of the former president Donald Trump “Inciting insurrection” with the attack on the Capitol will formally begin the week of Feb. 8, Senate Democratic majority leader Chuck Schumer said this Friday.

Schumer said the impeachment charges will be sent to the Senate on Monday, January 25, and that proceedings and preparations for their execution will begin on Tuesday.

Earlier, Senate Republican minority head Mitch McConnell had called for the start of the impeachment to be postponed until mid-February so Trump’s defense could prepare.

Schumer indicated that he and McConnell will continue to negotiate the length and form of the impeachment process.

“But make no mistake, the trial will take place in the United States Senate, and there will be a vote on whether or not to ‘condemn’ the president,” the Democrat said.

“It will be a full trial, it will be a fair trial,” he defended.

The President of the House of Representatives, the progressive Nancy Pelosi, had stated in a statement that he was “ paying attention to the fairness of the trial ” and stressed that Trump will have as much time to prepare his defense as the lawmakers who will act as “accusers” in impeachment.

This will be the second “impeachment” process, as the impeachment process is known in English against Trump, who was successful in the first “impeachment” in early 2020 due to his pressure on Ukraine.

Trump, the first president to be subject to two political trials, is this time charged with “inciting insurgency” over the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6 by a mob of his followers, which left five dead, including a police officer.

While the process can no longer lead to the removal of Trump, who left the White House on Wednesday, Democrats hope it will lead to the former president’s disqualification from future political office.

Under Senate rules, any impeachment must begin at 2 p.m. local time the day after the lower house sends the charge in question, known as the impeachment article, to the upper house.

However, the Senate has some flexibility in shaping the calendar.
