TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Loan
The Seattle Sounders have loaned winger Jordan Morris to Swansea City of the England Championship for the remainder of the 2020-21 season, the club announced on Thursday. The Athletic was the first to report the move on January 17.
The 26-year-old is Swansea’s third signing of the winter term, following Ben Hamer’s move from Huddersfield and Conor Hourihane’s arrival from Aston Villa. The Swans are currently second in the Championship table.
Morris has been a hugely successful homegrown signing since joining the Sounders in January 2016. He has 35 goals and 20 assists in 105 MLS appearances, won two MLS Cups with Seattle, and finished in the 2020 Best XI in the league.
“At the end of the day, this move is all about Jordan and what he wants from his career,” Garth Lagerwey, Sounders general manager and president of football, said in a press release. “Our club and city are behind him as he embarks on the next phase of his journey, and when he returns to Seattle at the end of this loan, we know he will be stronger for the experience.”
Morris, who has scored 10 goals in 39 appearances for the US men’s national team, got permission from Gregg Berhalter to leave the USMNT camp in Florida last Wednesday. In a video conference with reporters during the USMNT camp earlier this month, Morris admitted European interest.
“I am very proud of the player and professional that Jordan has become. He has been a big part of the success of this club and more than deserved this opportunity to practice his trade abroad,” said Brian Schmetzer, head coach from Sounders in a press release. “This particular move gives him the opportunity to showcase his skills and opens up some options for his future. Plus, I look forward to seeing him play for Swansea.”
Morris had a chance to play abroad after playing NCAA Division I football at Stanford, but turned down a move to Werder Bremen to play for his hometown.
