The Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (Egehid) has forecast that hydroelectric power generation and other renewable resources such as wind and solar will increase by 334.46 megawatts by the year 2024.
This projection from Egehid’s general manager Rafael Salazar is based on the diversification of power generation through 11 projects to be developed by the entity, with an investment of more than US $ 1,083 million.
According to information provided by Salazar in a meeting with the economic press this Tuesday, current hydroelectric power plants generate 613.81 megawatts, but an installed capacity of 948.27 megawatts should be reached by 2024.
Until then, Egehid stood out for its hydropower generation, but now it is trying to promote a number of solar and wind projects.
Works and investments
One of the projects already confirmed by Egehid as having passed the study phase is the Hatillo Dam extension which could be ready in June 2021 and which would have an installed capacity of 10.76 megawatts and an investment of US $ 650,000.
Solar energy generation
For this year, according to information from the general manager of Egehid, three solar energy generation projects would also enter the system.
One of these is “Brazo Derecho Solar” with three megawatts of installed power and an investment of US $ 6.6 million.
Salazar added that “Domingo Rodríguez Solar” and “Sabaneta Solar” would each cost $ 6.6 million and contribute to the annual installed capacity growth of three megawatts each.

Egehid has two projects in the pipeline for 2022. “Sabana Yegua Solar” would contribute three megawatts to the electrical system and represent an investment of $ 6.6 million, while the “Tierra Nueva” wind farm would contribute 50 megawatts and cost $ 114 million to develop.
Speaking to the press during a luncheon, Salazar reported that by 2024, the “Las Placetas” generation project will generate 191 megawatts and have an investment of $ 750 million. The “Artibonito project”, which would consist of two dams, which together would produce 52.2 megawatts of clean energy, would represent $ 160 million, while “San José (Guayubín)” would generate 8 megawatts and approximately $ 36 million would cost.
The official noted that the “Brazo Derecho” wind farm is also expected to be ready by 2024 with an investment of $ 17 million generating 10 megawatts.
The installation of a mini-factory in the Yacahueque Dam is another project that would be operational that year, generating 0.70 megawatts of clean energy.
