George Paton was introduced as the Broncos general manager today, and the principal gave a thoughtful response when explaining how he would help restore a winning culture in Denver.
“There are no shortcuts” Paton said (via the team website). ‘We’re going to embrace it from day to day [process], we’re gonna embrace the grind, and we’re gonna do it together. … We will be progressive, we will be innovative, we will be progressive and we will use all the information we have at our disposal to make the most informed decisions. “
Paton also noted the importance of getting into design and being innovative in their evaluation of potential acquisitions.
“Drawing up and developing players will be our foundation” Paton said. “It will be the lifeblood of this football team.”
Paton joined the Broncos on a six-year deal. Under the restructured front office, Paton and head coach Vic Fangio will report to John Elway, which have less to do with the team’s daily selection decisions.
Let’s check out some more GM and coaching notes …
- Washington previously interviewed Eric Stokes for their vacancy for general manager, reports Jason La Canfora (via Twitter). The 47-year-old has served in the NFL front offices since 2002, including stints at the Seahawks, Buccaneers, Dolphins, and Panthers. He joined Washington last summer as their director of pro scouting. We learned yesterday that Washington is expected to eventually hire the former Panthers GM Marty Hurne for the position.
- Scott Linehan and Joe Cullen will interview for the Jaguars open coordinator positions this week, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter). We heard about it Urban Meyerinterest in both coaches last weekend. Linehan, who is running for the offensive coordinator’s appearance, has had a long coaching career, including a stint as head coach of the Rams. A candidate for the opening defensive coordinator, Cullen has been Baltimore’s defensive coach since 2016. Rapoport notes that Raheem Morris was also a candidate for the opening defensive coordinator, but we’ve since learned that Morris will take the same role with the Rams.
- The Chargers will not retain an offensive line coach James Camp, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). Campen spent more than a decade with the Packers, and after a one-season spell with the Browns, Campen joined the Chargers last off season as their offensive line coach. However, he will not linger, Schefter notes that new head coach B.Randon Staley brings in its own OL coach.
- The Dolphins broke up with the offensive line coach Steve Marshall and promoted Lemuel Jean Pierre to the role, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). Marshall has spent more than a decade coaching in the NFL, joining Miami last off-season. Jeanpierre has spent time on the coaching staff of Seahawks, Raiders and Dolphins, serving as Miami’s assistant offensive line coach in 2020.
