FedEx to cut up to 6,300 jobs in Europe after purchasing TNT

The American logistics and transport group FedEx announced on Tuesday that it plans to cut between 5,500 and 6,300 jobs in Europe following the acquisition of the Dutch group TNT in 2016.

“Since the purchase, we have managed to successfully combine the computer systems and some key operations of our air, road and land transport networks, while investing in technologies and infrastructure,” the group explains in a statement.

The acquisition was designed to expand the FedEx Express subsidiary across the Atlantic “by connecting the world’s largest express transportation network with an unparalleled European route network and global service offering,” the company recalled in a statement.

FedEx confirmed that it began negotiating with the company’s employee representative bodies on these staff cuts on Tuesday.

The company plans measures to support affected employees, differentiated by country, and includes the option of voluntary departure.

The process takes 18 months.

The group plans to merge the FedEx Express and TNT aviation networks and make Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris its main center of activity.
