Argentina earthquake: 6.4 earthquake hits San Juan province, no tsunami warning issued

A series of aftershocks across the country followed. An aftershock of magnitude 5.0 struck 27 kilometers (about 16.8 miles) southwest of Nueve de Julio, about 1,000 km (620 miles) east of the first earthquake and nearly 20 minutes later.

Then came a magnitude 4.9 earthquake in the same area as the first, followed by a magnitude 5.3 aftershock.

The magnitude 4.9, 5.0, and 5.3 earthquakes are considered aftershocks because they are smaller than the main earthquake and located in the same area.

According to available data, there is no tsunami threat at this time, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).

In its preliminary statement, the PTWC fixed the depth of the earthquake at approximately 20 kilometers (12.43 miles).

It was a “strong” earthquake, said CNN and Espanol reporter Agostina Montaño in San Juan, adding that everything fell off the shelves of his home.

This is a story in development, there is more to come.
