Hot bags recalled for possible contamination from glass and plastic

Nestlé Prepared Foods has issued a recall of their hot bags of pepperoni due to the potential for contamination from “foreign materials,” the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Friday.

The company recalls the popular product after reports that there are fraudulent pieces of plastic and glass in some hot bags.

The FSIS received four reports from customers claiming to have found the materials in their hot bags, leading to the recall of approximately 762,615 pounds of the non-ready items.

Only one “minor injury” has been reported so far in connection with the contamination, but the FSIS encourages consumers who have purchased the product to exercise caution and avoid consumption.

“This product must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase,” wrote the FSIS.

The products in question were produced between November 13, 2020 and November 16, 2020 and shipped to retailers across the country, the FSIS says.

Consumers are warned to look for hot bags with a label that reads “Nestlé HOT POCKETS BRAND SANDWICHES: PREMIUM PEPPERONI MADE WITH PORK, CHICKEN AND BEEF PIZZA GARLIC BUTTER” best used before February 2022 date.

The FSIS has classified the contaminated hot bags as a Class I “high risk” problem and is urging consumers to seek medical attention if they come into contact with the product.

Nestlé Prepared Foods, which acquired Hot Pockets in 2002, could not immediately be reached for comment.
