Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) partially blamed Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg for last week’s riot on the Capitol, highlighting doubts she raised last year when she took the social media assault on disinformation challenged.
At a meeting at the town hall on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez said Facebook was “trying to minimize damage.”
“But they knew,” she claimed. “Not only did they know, but they allowed it.”

AOC brought up the Congressional hearing, where Zuckerberg and other major tech giants testified about how they are tackling disinformation ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
“We knew this was a problem,” she said. We knew this before COVID, I specifically asked him about election disinformation and Facebook’s links with white supremacist organizations, and the links that ‘fact-checking organizations’ had with other white supremacist outlets … and he wouldn’t answer. So there is a very clear link here. ‘

Speaking to Reuters, Sandberg said Facebook had already removed QAnon, the Proud Boys and named #StoptheSteal from the platform.
‘Our enforcement is never perfect, so I’m sure there were still things on Facebook … I think these events were largely run on platforms that don’t have our abilities to stop hate, and don’t have our values “They have our transparency,” she said.
AOC’s comments come because Facebook announced that it will review all inauguration-related events and remove the ones that violate site policies. They also block events created in the US by foreign accounts and pages.
“We are following signs of violence or other threats in both Washington, DC and all 50 states,” Facebook said in a statement, CBS News reported. ‘… as we did in the weeks following the presidential election, we promote accurate information about the elections and the violence in the Capitol instead of content that our systems predict may be less accurate, delegitimize the election, or the rioters as victims depicts. ‘
